Walter Roland Meyer, of Saint Louis, Missouri, passed away Friday, February 21, 2020 at the age of 89. Loving significant other of 34 years to Betty Halloran; beloved son of the late Edward and Augusta Meyer; devoted father of Dennis (Jeanne) Meyer, Gretchen Meyer, and the late Philip Meyer; cherished grandfather of Ross (Jessica Ammel) Meyer, Claire Meyer, and Teddy Meyer; dear brother-in-law of Vivian Meyer. Walter was also preceded in death by his siblings, Amanda (Charles) Wilkinson, Edward (Verna) Meyer, Henry (Mildred) Meyer, Joe (Evelyn) Meyer, Clarence Meyer, and George (Mary) Meyer.
Walter was a hard-working carpenter for 50 years, and he loved every minute of his work. He actually built all five homes he lived in throughout his life. As a young child, he worked for a truck farmer and was proud of the $1 per day wage he brought home. Later he bought a farm for his family, which turned into his “vacation” home for his out-of-town retreat, which he maintained so well that it looked like an actual park.
As an outdoorsman, Walter loved to cut wood and start fires, and he could be a little dangerous with a chainsaw and a match! He enjoyed hunting and fishing in past years, and as a youth he did some furtrapping to pay for his schooling. He always kept busy and never “let any grass grow under his feet.”
Walter was outgoing and a social “firefly” who never knew a stranger, and everyone called him Pop, he just loved being the center of attention. He loved to dance, and he especially enjoyed ballroom dancing. He loved adventure and traveling and going on cruises. He and Betty also spent about 3 weeks driving to and from Alaska. Walter was a performer in his younger years, and he was quite a ham! He was also very good at limericks and always had a joke to tell. He loved and adored his dogs! Walter was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
