William Francis Mannion passed away peacefully on Friday, July 26, 2024, at the age of 90.
William “Bill” was born on September 2, 1933, in St Louis, MO to John and Ellen (Mullaney) Mannion.
Bill attended Holy Rosary Catholic Grade School, where many lifelong friendships began in the playground. He graduated from DeAndreis High School. He married the love of his life, Patricia (Prost) Mannion on August 3,1957, and they were happily married for 67 years, sharing a lifetime of love and companionship.
Bill was known to be a tough competitor. He enjoyed playing many sports and games, but everyone knew that his favorite sport was soccer. Bill and his seven brothers were well known for their soccer skills, particularly in the CYC league of North St Louis. Bill was a veteran who proudly served in the US Army. He was stationed in Korea, where he assisted in relief and rehabilitation efforts following the devastation of the Korean conflict. Bill dedicated much of his leisure time to coaching and mentoring young athletes in both soccer and softball. His influence extended beyond the field, as he touched countless young lives with his kindness, humor, and wisdom … always offering a warm welcome to everyone he met.
Known for a deep-rooted pride in his Irish heritage, Bill embraced and celebrated his roots, becoming a beloved figure in his community. Being Irish was a hallmark of his identity, adding to the rich tapestry of his remarkable life. Above all, Bill cherished his family and the time they spent together. Retirement afforded him the opportunity to spend quality time with his grandkids. He enjoyed all the school plays, band concerts, track and cross country meets, water polo, basketball, volleyball, baseball, bowling tournaments, and soccer games. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Bill was preceded in death by his loving parents and four dear brothers: John “Jack” Mannion, Joe (Marge) Mannion, Tom Mannion, and Terry (the late Barb) Mannion.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife Patricia (Prost) Mannion. His four children: Kathleen Smith, Sharon (Tim) Gearin, Marty (Lisa) Mannion, and Kevin Mannion.
