Zelma L. Young

Zelma L. Young, 92, of Woodland Park, Colorado passed away on February 19 at her home, surrounded by her family. Zelma was born in Carter County, Missouri on December 30, 1917 to Frank and Minnie (Moss) Meyers. In 1933, she married Harold Ballard, who preceded her in death in 1952. They had two sons: Edward (who died in infancy) and Harold (deceased in 2000). In 1954, she married August Young, who preceded her in death in 1961. They had one daughter Sharon. Zelma was preceded in death by her mother, father and brother Basil. She is survived by her daughter Sharon (Dave) Dernbach and grandchildren Alison and Eric of Woodland Park, her daughter-in-law Wanda Ballard and grandchildren Kenny (Peggy), Donald (Teresa), and Cindy (Scott) of Virginia. She will be missed by her great grandchildren Amy, Kelly, Kelsey, Samantha and Becky and her great, great grandchildren Hunter, Layla, Eathan and Gracie. She is survived by her sister Sylvia Stilley and nieces Georgia and Sue of Poplar Bluff. Zelma lived in southern Missouri and northern Arkansas before moving to St. Louis in the 1930s, then to St. Charles in 1961. While living in St. Charles, she was a member of Good Shepherd United Church of Christ. Zelma worked in food service at Lindenwood College for almost 24 years. In 1990 after retiring, she moved to Santa Fe and then on to Woodland Park to be closer to family where she enjoyed the views of Pikes Peak everyday. She reminisced often about her 1947 trip to Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak. Zelma loved quilting, gardening, collecting Depression glass, Cripple Creek, Beanie Babies and all the wildlife passing through her backyard. She enjoyed traveling to Virginia, South Carolina, New Mexico, and Utah and anywhere in Colorado. She was a sports fan of the St. Louis Blues, St. Louis Browns (back in the day) and NASCAR. She loved her family, friends and her beloved "granddog" Meeka. She will be truly missed. Memorial contributions may be made to Prospect Home Care & Hospice, 16222 W.
